3.4. Power Optimization

3.4.1. Introduction to Power Optimization

Power optimization is the process of reducing the electrical energy consumed by an embedded system while maintaining its required functionality.

This is especially important for:

  • Battery-powered systems
  • IoT devices
  • Wearable devices
  • Wireless sensors
  • Remote monitoring systems
  • Solar-powered systems

3.4.2. Sources of power consumption

Power may be consumed by:

  • Microcontroller
  • Sensors
  • Display
  • Communication modules
  • LEDs
  • Motors
  • Memory devices
  • Voltage regulators

3.4.3. Techniques for power optimization

1. Sleep modes

Many microcontrollers provide sleep modes.

Instead of continuously running:

Active → Active → Active → Active

The system can operate as:

Active → Sleep → Wake → Active → Sleep

This can significantly reduce energy consumption.

2. Reduce clock frequency

Running a processor at a lower frequency can reduce power consumption when high processing speed is not required.

3. Turn off unused peripherals

Unused modules can be disabled.

For example:

Unused UART → OFF

Unused ADC → OFF

Unused sensor → OFF

Unused LED → OFF

4. Reduce communication

Wireless communication can consume significant energy. Sending data only when necessary can save power.

5. Control sensors

A sensor does not always need to operate continuously.

For example:

Wake up → Measure temperature → Store/send result → Sleep

Example: Battery sensor

A temperature monitoring system may wake every 10 minutes, take one measurement, transmit it, and return to sleep.

This consumes much less energy than continuously measuring and transmitting.

Benefits of power optimization

  • Extends battery life.
  • Reduces heat generation.
  • Reduces energy costs.
  • Allows smaller batteries.
  • Makes solar-powered operation easier.
  • Improves system efficiency.
