Select materials requirements on PCB design

Selecting the correct PCB (Printed Circuit Board) material is important because the material affects the board’s electrical performance, mechanical strength, thermal performance, reliability, and cost

Factors to consider when selecting PCB materials

  1. Operating temperature: Choose a material that can withstand the expected temperature without degrading.
  2. Electrical requirements:  High-speed or RF circuits may require materials with controlled dielectric constant and low dielectric loss.
  3. Thermal requirements: High-power components need materials with good heat dissipation, such as aluminum or ceramic substrates.
  4. Mechanical requirements; Applications involving vibration, bending, or repeated movement may require flexible or mechanically strong materials.
  5. Environmental conditions: Moisture, chemicals, humidity, and harsh environments can influence material selection.
  6. Layer count and construction: Multilayer and high-density boards may require higher-quality laminate materials.
  7. Cost: The material should meet the application requirements while remaining economically practical.

Manufacturing requirements: The selected material must be compatible with the PCB fabrication and assembly processes
