On March 22, 2024, Kigali celebrated Arduino Day 2024 with an inspiring event hosted at UNIPOD University of Rwanda. This event was jointly organized by FabLab Rwanda, Nyereka Tech, the Arm Developer Program, and UNIPOD.
The day was marked by engaging discussions and informative sessions centered around Arduino technology. Held within the premises of UNIPOD University, attendees were treated to a deep dive into the world of Arduino.

For those unfamiliar, Arduino is an open-source platform designed for creating electronic projects. Comprising a microcontroller board and accompanying software for programming, Arduino is renowned for its user-friendly interface, cost-effectiveness, and wide-ranging applications.
Arduino boards find utility across a diverse spectrum of projects, spanning from elementary tasks like blinking LED lights to complex creations such as robotics and sophisticated electronic gadgets. Embraced by hobbyists, students, and industry experts alike, Arduino’s appeal transcends boundaries.
The Arduino software development environment offers a streamlined programming interface coupled with a comprehensive array of libraries. This facilitates users in crafting code tailored to their specific project requirements with greater ease and efficiency.
During the event, Ms. Husna from FabLab delivered the opening remarks, extending a warm welcome to all attendees. The agenda included a series of discussions aimed at explain the utility and significance of Arduino in the realm of technology.

One of the highlighted topics was “Bridging the Digital and Physical Worlds: Front End Development for Arduino Products,” which was presented by Mr. TUYISHIMIRE Aimee Thierry. He articulated how Arduino serves as a catalyst in bridging the gap between the digital and physical domains. Mr. Thierry emphasized, “Arduino facilitates this connection by enabling interaction with sensors and actuators, processing data, executing programmed instructions, facilitating communication with other devices, integrating user interfaces, and interfacing with software and the internet.” He underscored Arduino’s versatility, emphasizing its potency as a tool for creating projects that seamlessly blend the digital landscape with the physical environment.

Another compelling topic addressed during the event was “Empowering Makers of Big Intelligence with Tiny Machines,” presented by Ms. Esther Habimana. She elaborated on the practical applications and significance of Tiny Machines, shedding light on their utilization in various real-world scenarios.
Ms. HABIMANA highlighted that Tiny Machines find widespread use in diverse domains such as wearable technology, Internet of Things (IoT) sensors, healthcare systems, smart city infrastructure, and consumer electronics. She emphasized how these miniature devices empower these applications to execute intelligent functions autonomously, without the need for continuous internet connectivity. This autonomy not only enhances efficiency but also bolsters reliability in the operation of such systems.

During the event, we were fortunate to engage in a discussion led by Dr. James Rwigema, a Senior Lecturer at the University of Rwanda. Dr. Rwigema expounded on the pivotal role of Arduino in STEM education, particularly in nurturing creativity among students through immersive classroom projects. He underscored Arduino’s versatility, affordability, and accessibility, highlighting its capacity to facilitate the creation of interactive projects that ignite curiosity and foster innovation among students.

Furthermore, attendees had the opportunity to explore the premises of UNIPOD and delve into some of the institution’s ongoing projects and activities. This segment, titled “Unleashing Innovation: Introducing UniPod, Your Gateway to Electronic and Emerging Tech Solutions,” provided insights into the cutting-edge initiatives underway at UNIPOD, showcasing its commitment to fostering innovation in the electronic and emerging technology sectors.

The event concluded with closing remarks and networking opportunities, allowing attendees to connect with experts and professionals in the tech field, further enriching the exchange of ideas and insights garnered throughout the day.
